Fresh for 2010 is an artist with an incredible attitude and unique vibe – U.R.V. This female MC from tha T-Dot is turning heads wherever she performs and is working on her new album and singles as we speak.

U.R.V.

U.R.V (Urvah Shahnawaz),
spent the first few years of her life in the heart of the Middle East and was raised with strict values in a traditional Islamic home. U.R.V grew up in Dubai and comes from an Indo-Pakistan background. U.R.V’s mother had been a strong influence in her life and introduced her to media, the performing arts and music at a very young age. U.R.V developed her gifts in Music, Canvas Art, Dancing & acting while maintaining a passion for Journalism which was primarily influenced by her upbringing.

At the age of 16, U.R.V decided to make her own way independent of family and broke ties with traditional and ingrained cultural expectations. She embarked on what can only be  described as a courageous journey. Not too long after starting her brave independent life, she grew closer to her spiritual side and dedicated her life to Christianity form the Muslim religion.

Right after leaving the family home, U.R.V dropped out of high school. Due to years of being tied down to rules and regulation, U.R.V had the rebellious spirit to step out the box to explore the world on her own.She successfully broke through the cycles of drug abuse and gave up on living the rough street life.

Coming from a family of musicians, U.R.V was never a stranger to creating and living a life of music. Her biggest influence is an artist known as M.I.A (Maya Arulparagasam). U.R.V beleives that M.I.A has created a new genre of music, where one is able to take their life experiences and portray it positively with a head banging beat. U.R.V is also extremely influenced by strong female artists such as, Missy Elliot, Rah Digga, Gangsta Boo, Keiysha Cole & more.

U.R.V is a representation of what the independent thinking woman in the new millennium looks like; She always strives hard for what she wants for herself and those she has been able to influence. Whether it is music, education or  life itself, she lives to pursue her dreams with a passion for life. She is a confident performer who fearlessly writes and raps about her life  experiences.

2010 is the year for CNS! This band is a fusion of Alternative Rock and Electro with a sound that will blow your mind! Look out for them in a city near you as they begin touring in early 2010.

CNS (The Central Nervous System)

When CNS (The Central Nervous System) opens the throttle, it’s a G-force jet ride, but the real shock is that this band is a two-piece, twin-engine duo.

Ruben Huizenga (guitars, synth, vocals) and Dr. Kenneth Griffin  (drums) perform with a precision and power that recalls Bonham and Page, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Bono and Edge. Inject Bowie arrangements with Beastie Boys wit and cross it with Bad Company  behaviour and you get the idea.

CNS pays homage to the 70’s but doesn’t get stuck in the past. “It’s a modern take on 1971, when the sound was unhindered and vinyl albums spun uninterrupted on turntables,” says Huizenga.

Today, it’s about as much about moving to the beats as being moved by the music, and that is why people are turning up the volume on CNS. If Humble Pie and  The Who wrote with dance clubs in mind, this is what they would sound like.

CNS arrangements are mini-mixes, with clearly distinguished segments, which makes each song a rock-meets-beats symphony. Listen to “Dance Boy Dance”  or “Meltdown” and you forget it’s one song.

Orchestral in the attack, singular in their drive, the tracks are lyrically sound and rock-steady. They blend seamlessly into the club mix , and when “Someday Never Comes” hits the monitors it always seems perfectly timed for the moment of the night. And tracks are welcome companions on the long-drive home, amped up and blasting in sequence on the car sound system at 3 a.m.

Even during an acoustic entry into a song, anticipation builds like the countdown on a dragstrip. When the song takes off, it takes your breath away.

Veteran musicians Huizenga and Griffin have a breadth and open-mindedness that is a breath of fresh air on the music scene today. They also have a secret weapon in form of a back tracks black box. He’s a powerful electronic companion on stage and in the studio. It’s the connective tissue that gives CNS the agility to leap decades — from deep groove to dance beat and back again. “We named him NOMAD.  He never gets hangovers and he always show up for practice on time. “

CNS recalls an analog age and serves it up in 2010 with android assistance.

This weeks featured artist on NX2SHINE is comin outta the T-Dot – Tha Rex to be exact. The many faces of Kolor Brown can be seen as he is one of the most versatile artists/producers i have nhad the pleasure to work with. His deep soulful voice rooted in Reggae, Hip-Hop and RnB bring a unique flavour to his music. I can wait for KB 2 blow up! which I predict will be soon and look out for his collaborative project with his group Crown A Thornz who will also be featured on NX2SHINE very soon!

KOLOR BROWN AKA BLACK LUNG

Kolor Brown is the definitive contemporary soul artist whose music has evolved through struggle, experience and experimentation. His distinct & beautiful voice takes you to times & places in memory and his stories are spacewalks through love, pain, angst, & triumph. Trained in visual & performance arts, Kolor Brown has been living music since he was able to harmonize his first note in the church choir. He has worked with some of this generations most talented musicians over the years allowing him to develop his talent as a singer, song writer, composer & producer.

For Kolor Brown, Art is about the essence of a time, more than the artists themselves. There is the Soul movement of the 60s & 70s journeyed by greats like Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye and Al Green, that represented a time of the Black struggle in America. The Reggae movement that brought forth the Jamaican essence with artists like, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Dennis Brown. Then there is the swagger of the Hip Hop movement; the cry and expression of the inner city youth who created their own way and forced the system to feel their struggle. All these experiences have laid the backdrop to his sound & music.

In 2005 Kolor Brown was featured on Rochester aka Juices A New Day that garnered heavy national rotation on radio & video, including a nomination for Best Rap video at the 2005 MMVAs. That summer also saw the successful release of his first EP titled The Kolor Brown Project and a sold out show at Revival featuring an 8 piece band. Kolor Brown has performed in venues all over Toronto including the historic Opera House, the original Bamboo, & the ACC.

Kolor Brown is now 1/3 of a new creative collective called CROWN A’ THORNZ with fellow members J-Wyze & Eklipz. They are currently in studio working on their debut collaborative effort scheduled for release at the end of this year.

Greetings!

Story time!

Dancehall artist Ice Black is originally from

Portmore, Jamaica, but moved to Canada

some years ago. As a yute, Ice and his friends

converted cardboard boxes into make-believe

sound systems, and for effect, used caps from

toothpaste tubes to replicate the knobs on a

system console. With hair brush in hand, Ice

DJ’d lyrics, while his bredrin held down the

sound!

Super producer Ron Allen, as in the multi

genre specialist (House, R&B, Hip Hop, Metal

etc.) is endorsing Ice Black and his newest single

“My Girl” featuring Steve Jlin. “Natasha,

this kid has it – you have to come down to the

studio!” Off I went, and sure enough, it is really

it! Label execs agree, but you know what I say;

nothing is stamped until my DJ’s say so!

The chune “My Girl” combines smooth R&B with

Dancehall where Ice and Jlin talk about their girl

and just how special she is.
