You gotta get this!  The Crown-A-Thornz album is finally here.  I had the great pleasure of mixing and mastering alot of the songs on this amazing collection of good hip-hop music.

From the deep to the soul reality of a generation spawned by the era of the original b-boy comes Crown A Thornz; thought purveyors who create a brand of fly, grown-up hip-hop. They are tempered by roots & culture, forged by inner city life, and shaped by soul, injecting reality on all lyrical levels.

Crown A’ Thornz is a creative collective featuring members, J Wyze, Eklipz, & Kolor Brown. Together they create music that inspires reflection and conversation while making heads nod. Their sound is unique to the experience of ‘the first of the last generation’: The first generation of Caribbean parents who found their way to North America with dreams of a better life, and the last generation of the foundation Hip hop era.

Crown A’ Thornz is consciousness music that addresses grown up issues about life, love, and trying to do better. It’s hustle music that speaks to the difficulties of the urban black male. It’s soul music to a generation that struggles for a better future. It’s hip hop music that is needed as an alternative to the material driven, commercial mainstream.

Toronto-based songstress geneva.b grew up on a steady diet of soft hits and yesterday’s classics thanks to dad’s radio station of choice, the ubiquitous k-lite FM in Hamilton. From choir girl to teen poet, geneva.b has been honing her songwriting skills for quite some time and has appeared on over a dozen underground releases, the fruits of which have landed her on the stages of various North American cities along the way.

Displaying a healthy respect for a well-crafted slow jam, “Bus Fare” — the first single from geneva.b’s debut album — is pensively introspective yet determined as the singer muses about a nagging urge to turn the page on someone who shouldn’t be. Ron Allen’s lush production and hard drums offset geneva.b’s breathy, stripped-down vocals, giving the track a dreamy, atmospheric quality sure to take the chill out of those long winter nights that turn into early Toronto mornings.

I posted this information a while back but I think it is important for all artists, producers and musicians to be aware of this revenue stream especially in today’s internet dominated music market.  There is money out there for you, but YOU HAVE TO REGISTER! – ITS FREE!

When you are creating a recording there must be an agreement in place with the Artist, Producer and possibly the musicians on how these royalties will be distributed. Dont wait til after the song is released or uploaded because you know how people can be if you try to negotiate this later when a million views/streams start showing up…  I will be working this way from now on with anybody I work with in the future and there are standard Agreement forms and Letter of Direction (for Producers, Musicians) on the SoundExchange website.  www.soundexchange.com

SoundExchange is the non-profit performance rights organization that collects statutory royalties from satellite radio (such as SIRIUS XM), internet radio, cable TV music channels and similar platforms for streaming sound recordings.  The Copyright Royalty Board, which is appointed by The U.S. Library of Congress, has entrusted SoundExchange as the sole entity in the United States to collect and distribute these digital performance royalties on behalf of featured recording artists, master rights owners (like record labels), and independent artists who record and own their masters.

If you are a featured recording artist or a sound recording copyright owner (SRCO), producer or creative contributor, you may have earned digital performance royalties for the use of sound recordings you own or on which you performed. Artists and SRCOs should register with SoundExchange as soon as possible, even if you’re a member of another performance rights organization, as only SoundExchange can provide digital royalties. Registration is fast and always free. Copyright holders and featured artists (generally, the most visible person, in print or image, on the physical package of a recording) are paid through SoundExchange. Session players and back-up musicians are paid from a separate royalty fund.
